India: SEZ Rules 2025 Updated to Boost Semiconductor Manufacturing and Ease Land Norms

The Indian government has introduced updated Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Rules, 2025, specifically targeting semiconductor and electronics manufacturing to boost domestic production under initiatives like the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The Key changes include relaxed land norms, such as reduced minimum land requirements and flexibility in contiguous land rules, making it easier for companies to establish facilities.

The rules also streamline infrastructure approvals (power, water, logistics) and simplify compliance to attract foreign and domestic investment. Additionally, fiscal incentives aligned with the Semicon India Programme aim to generate skilled employment and enhance India’s position as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub, reducing reliance on imports and competing with China and Southeast Asia.

These reforms address industry demands for lower operational barriers and support India’s push for self-reliance in critical electronics supply chains.
