South Africa’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Bonginkosi “Blade” Nzimande, called for the establishment of a technology park within the Coega Special Economic Zone to connect research and development with commercial production and support innovation-led manufacturing. The proposal was made during a visit to the zone and discussions on cooperation among government, industry, universities and research institutions. The proposed project would build on Coega’s industrial base, logistics infrastructure and access to international markets, as well as its proximity to Nelson Mandela University and scientific and technological centres. The Minister also called for the establishment of a Science, Technology and Innovation Forum in Nelson Mandela Bay to improve coordination between industry needs, skills development and research capabilities, and to help translate knowledge into investment opportunities and sustainable jobs.
