A research team led by Professor Wong Chin Yoong, an economics professor at Malaysia’s Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, developed a proposed framework for establishing the Miri–Kuala Baram–Kuala Belait Special Economic Zone, following an initiative put forward by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. The project aims to connect urban centres, ports and the border crossing between Miri and Brunei within an integrated economic corridor that promotes trade, investment and industrial growth, while capitalising on the complementary nature of the two economies and opportunities for tourism cooperation. The framework is built on developing sustainable infrastructure, coordinating cross-border policies and government bodies, supporting the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises, and using technology to improve operational efficiency. The next step is to translate the concept into practical policies, projects and cooperation mechanisms.
